Why do we suffer? Understanding and Overcoming the Roots of Pain

Suffering is a universal experience, yet it often feels so disconnected from our true nature. We are beings of joy, abundance, and light. These qualities are woven into our essence, yet we often experience pain, struggle, and limits in our everyday lives. So, why do we suffer? The answer lies in how we live our lives, and the distance we create between our true selves and how we experience the world. The journey toward freedom from suffering is not simple, but it is possible.

At the core of our being, we are more than just our physical bodies, mental thoughts, and emotional responses. We are eternal souls on a journey toward freedom from suffering, from the cycle of life and death. Our soul’s ultimate goal is to exist in its pure essence, free from pain and limitations. However, each life we live leaves behind impressions in our consciousness, called samskaras. These samskaras are formed by our experiences, and they often shape the way we perceive and interact with the world.

Unfortunately, most of us spend our lives responding to bodily needs, sensory desires, and mental patterns, none of which truly define who we are. In reality, we are our essence—our true being, which is infinite and whole. However, we often live from a limited perspective, clinging to attachments and perceptions that create a constant struggle between who we truly are and how we live. This dissonance is where much of our suffering arises.

Here are some of the key reasons we suffer and how we can overcome them:

1. Uncreative Living: Living Without Purpose

Many of us live without a clear purpose or direction. We go through life fulfilling basic needs, but without creating anything meaningful or expansive. The human spirit is inherently creative, but too often we limit ourselves to narrow goals or material pursuits. True fulfillment comes when we connect with our highest potential and create for the greater good, benefiting not just ourselves but all. Living with a higher creative purpose allows us to transcend ordinary struggles and step into a life of greater meaning.

2. Attachment: The Bond That Binds Us

Attachment to people, possessions, or the results of our actions creates a sense of ownership and belonging, which ultimately limits us. This attachment binds us to the material world and prevents us from experiencing the true abundance that is naturally ours. To transcend this limitation, we must practice detachment—letting go of our need to control or possess. Detachment opens the door to infinity and eternal peace.

3. Disconnection from Our Essential Self

Our true potential lies in our connection to our essential self, the deeper part of us that is connected to all life and the universe. Most of us are more connected to the external world—our senses, mind, and emotions—yet these are often distorted by past experiences and societal conditioning. This disconnect from our true nature leads to confusion and suffering. The key to ending this suffering is to embark on an inner journey to awaken our essence. Practices such as meditation, writing, or art can help us reconnect with our core and begin living from our true self.

4. Selfishness: The Illusion of Separation

At our core, we are all interconnected, but selfishness creates the illusion of separation. When we focus solely on our own needs and desires, we forget that the ultimate journey is the soul’s quest for unity with its essence. Selfishness piles on more suffering, creating tension between our desires and the reality of our interconnectedness. To overcome this, we must shift our focus from self-centeredness to a life of service, compassion, and goodwill toward all.

5. Ego: The False Self That Blocks Our True Essence

The ego—our sense of “I,” “me,” or “mine”—is the greatest barrier to our true freedom. It arises from limited perceptions of ourselves and the world, rooted in past experiences and the idea of separation. Ego feeds on righteousness and judgment, creating both inner and outer conflict. Overcoming ego is challenging, but it begins with awareness. Recognizing when our ego is in control is the first step toward breaking free from its grip. Detachment and the pursuit of spiritual freedom are key to dissolving the ego and reconnecting with our higher self.

6. Shallow Living: Fear and Comfort Zone

Our true essence desires to break free from limitations, but we often resist out of fear. We want growth, freedom, and unbounded joy, yet we remain confined within our comfort zones. This internal struggle creates suffering as we fight against our deeper aspirations. To end this cycle, we must embrace the discomfort of growth—seeking deeper meaning, challenging our fears, and breaking through the boundaries that keep us from becoming our highest selves.

These are just some of the more apparent reasons for suffering. In truth, the causes of pain and joy are deeply subtle, and only the most sincere seekers will dive deep enough to uncover the true essence of their being. However, by recognizing these key obstacles to peace and taking steps toward inner awakening, we can gradually move toward a life of freedom, light, and boundless potential. The journey may be long and challenging, but it is the path to our true, limitless selves.
